Skill focus feat

Note: This thread was started by Mort. In order to retain the thread, I've archived the OP:

Oh, while I remember it, I read this little rule change document someone had cobbled together and one thing struck me as being really nifty.

The skill focus feat, which gives you a +2 to any skill, is totally pants, +2 is such a paltry reward that I can't really see anyone bothering with a feat like that, most certainly not if the GM allows feats from random splat books. So this guy came up with a different version of the feat, which looked a bit like this:

Skill Focus

Select one skill. This feat allows you to roll 3d20's and select one to use every time you use this skill.

Now, that is something I might consider taking...

This feat is widely regarded as being the weakest in the book, rivalled only by Toughness. It's definately going up to +3 in the new version of the books, and about time too.

The variant that's suggested there sounds a little too powerful for my liking. I think I'd probably restrict it to 2d20. Still, this is a reasonable idea. (Mechanically, that is. I think the designers would frown upon this corruption of their one true vision of d20 :-)

Yes, you are right, 2d20 would probably be a bit more sensible.
Another idea I just got was that perhaps let anyone with skill focus take 10 in any situation, simulating the extreme training and control over the choosen skill. Dunno if this would be over powered or not, testing required...

The take-10 anywhere thing seems reasonable as an alternative, although it reduces the utility of the feat for skills like Craft, which tend not to be attempted under difficult circumstances.
